This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, how dentistcost.co.uk uses them, and how you can control them. It supplements our Privacy Policy and is required under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and UK GDPR.

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device when you visit a website. Cookies let websites remember your preferences, secure your session, and (with your consent) measure how the site is used. Similar technologies — local storage, session storage, fingerprinting — are treated the same way under PECR.

2. Categories of cookies we use

Under UK ICO guidance we group cookies into the categories below. Strictly necessary cookies are always enabled. All other categories require your active opt-in via the cookie banner or the link.

Strictly necessary (always on)

Essential for the website to function. They enable core navigation, remember your cookie preferences, and protect against fraud. They do not track you or collect personal data for marketing.

Analytics

Help us understand which pages are popular and how visitors move through the site so we can improve content. Analytics data is aggregated and does not identify you personally.

Cookies / storage used: Google Analytics 4 (_ga, _ga_* — first-party, 13-month expiry). Loads only after you opt in; consent starts as denied under Google Consent Mode v2, and withdrawing consent deletes the cookies.

Functional

Remember non-essential preferences such as your preferred view or chosen comparison cities for our cost-by-city tools.

Marketing & advertising

Track visits across websites to build a profile of your interests and show advertising relevant to you. We do not currently use marketing cookies and will only do so if and when you opt in.

3. Cookies set by third parties

The only third-party service we use is Google Analytics 4, and it loads only after you opt in via the Analytics category. Until you do, the Google tag is not loaded at all and consent is recorded as denied under Google Consent Mode v2, so no analytics cookies are set and no data is sent. If you later withdraw consent, the analytics cookies already set are deleted.

When you opt in, Google Analytics sets the _ga cookie and a _ga_* cookie (both first-party, expiring after 13 months) to distinguish visitors and measure aggregated page usage. We do not use Meta Pixel or any advertising network. Some pages embed neutral assets (carousel JavaScript, font files, icon libraries) served from our own server; these do not set tracking cookies.

4. Your control over cookies

  • Use the button (also in the footer) to change your preferences at any time.
  • Withdraw consent: change a category from "allowed" back to "not allowed" in cookie settings. Stored data for that category will be removed where technically possible.
  • Browser controls: most browsers let you block all cookies, allow only first-party cookies, or delete cookies on exit. See aboutcookies.org for browser-specific instructions.
  • Global Privacy Control (GPC): we honour the GPC browser signal where we receive it.

5. How long cookies last

  • dc_uk_consent_v1 (your cookie preferences): up to 12 months in your browser's local storage. We ask again after that.
  • Session cookies set by future tools we may add (analytics, functional) will be documented here with their full retention periods.

6. Children

We do not knowingly use cookies that profile or target children under 13. The site is aimed at adults seeking dental cost information.

7. Changes to this policy

Whenever we add or remove a cookie or change a category, we will update this page and reset your previous consent so you can review and re-decide.
